Scott Bower
Founder CEO
Scott first came to Japan in 1985 while travelling in Asia and fell in love with the country. He came back to teach English in 1987 and has never looked back. In 2004 he learned of a prize-winning JDM import business plan that sparked him to go through the process of purchasing a vehicle from auction in Japan, exporting it to Canada, and then importing it with his brother-in-law to learn the entire process, and Japan Car Direct was born. JCD’s goal is most definitely customer satisfaction and it’s done by providing accurate translations, in depth inspections, auction bidding and efficient logistical services, all allowing customers to get the best condition vehicles at the lowest possible prices. Scott also takes advantage of the auctions for his family transportation needs and enjoys golfing, skiing and playing ice hockey in his free time. Mathew Matusiak
President
Matt has been in the car business since 2015 and leads the JCD team. His initial interest in van life and overlanding drew him to vehicles at the Japanese Dealer Auctions. Matt has a degree in Japanese and international business. He has resided in Japan for 15 years and is completely fluent in Japanese. Before moving to Japan, Matt worked logistics and automotive parts import with NYK in Chicago, IL. His detailed auction sheet translations and pre-bidding vehicle inspections set the tone for JCD customer service. In his free time, he enjoys taking his boys camping & skiing, playing ice hockey and he knows his way around a kitchen very well.
Hiroki Deguchi
Office Manager
Hiroki grew up in Japan but chose to go to university in Alaska where he studied global logistics management and information systems. He then went onto acquire his MBA with a focus on data analysis. After 13 years of studying and working in logistics and IT in the US he came back to Japan. After returning he worked in a large Japanese firm, but due to his desire to maintain his diverse language, business, and IT skills, he joined the JCD team. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, back country skiing, playing ice hockey, motorcycle riding, and working on DIY projects.
Yoshiro Nakajima
Auction & Export Manager
Yoshi was born in San Francisco and lived most of his life in California before moving to Japan in 2013 and is fluent in both English and Japanese. He is also a classic car and motorcycle enthusiast and has worked on cars for most of his adult life. He has owned 4 first generation Z cars (1971,1973,1975,1978), a 1960 Mini, 1970 Honda CB750, 1975 Honda CB400F, and a 1975 Kawasaki H1 500 Mach III. He enjoys working on his 1975 Fairlady Z, and also owns a 1997 Yamaha SZR660. When not working on cars, he enjoys cooking, manga, anime, video games and spending time with kids as a registered foster parent.
Taylor Harrison
Auction & Export Agent
Taylor was born in Canada, raised in Japan until graduating high school and then moved back to Vancouver and studied business at the University of British Columbia. After graduating he worked as a logs and lumber broker in Canada, at the farms in New Zealand, and at the mines in Western Australia. He is now very happy to be back in Japan and helping people from all over the globe find their dream JDM vehicles. Nothing better than hearing back from a customer after they’ve received their car and seeing a photo of them with a big smile on their face in the foreground and their JDM ride in the background! At JCD we take pride in making dreams come true!
Mike Nguyen
Auction & Export Agent
Mike became interested in Japanese cars and auction cars when he bought his first car in Japan, a 1997 Mitsubishi Pajero Mini. Having adventured across the country in his car, as well as in the kei trucks and vans of his friends, he has a healthy amount of respect for what these little machines can do. Mike is a SoCal native and has lived in Japan for 10 years. He recently affirmed his Japanese ability by passing level one of the Japanese proficiency examination. In his free time, he enjoys camping, hiking and spearfishing. These hobbies have taken him to visit 40 of the 47 wonderful Japanese prefectures by car. The snowy north of Hokkaido and Tohoku are the last places on his checklist.
Mason V
Auction & Export Agent
Mason is a Canadian who grew up in Calgary and spent his teenage years moving around South America before returning to Canada for university, where he graduated from the University of Victoria with a degree in Political Science and Japanese. A fan of JDM cars since first playing Gran Turismo as a child, Mason personally loves anything with a small, high revving engine. Despite being nearly six and a half feet tall, he loves Kei cars and 250cc sport bikes. In fact, his dream garage consists of a Honda Beat parked next to a Honda NSR250SP. His hobbies include motorcycle touring, playing video games, watching motorsports, studying Japanese, and photographing the beauty of Japan.
Miyuki Hosotani
Document Department Manager
Miyuki is an accomplished office professional with backgrounds in both the medical and automotive fields. Before joining JCD she was an export agent for Tau Corporation in Chicago IL where she handled shipments to New Zealand. Miyuki enjoys movie going and drives her kei car to get there.
Andrew Gilroy
Social Media Manager
Andrew is the team’s British representative. He has lived in Japan for 8 years after studying French and Japanese at university in the UK. He has always been into cars and would paint his house Racing Green if it wasn’t a rental! He is a keen snowboarder and his first job in Japan was at a rental shop at the base of the Japanese Alps in Hakuba, which is famous for the 1998 Winter Olympics. Since then, he has settled down in Osaka and enjoys watching Cerezo Osaka play footie on weekends. Working daily on the social posts, he is able to share examples of happy customers from around the globe who have partnered with JCD to get their dream cars delivered to their nearest port!

I’ve never bought a new car in my life, and the best part of working in the Japanese used car export business is helping other guys to avoid buying new cars. I’ve worked in various industries in Japan, the UK, and Canada and, somehow, my jobs have always related to cars. Actually, I love cars and, for me, the best are Japanese cars from the 1990s. Those are my favorites because component quality, build, concept and design were generally spot on in the ’90s here in Japan. I always buy second hand and I really enjoy keeping a good old car on the road; and I save a pack of money while I’m at it. So, yeah, I’m a used car believer. Let’s keep the good old machines running!
